Salmon success--upper columbia

Just wanting to see how peoples success is, providing the fact that it is a record salmon run this year

talked to my buddy that guides brewster/wells the other day.  He had 3 kings and 3 sockeye. I think he hit wells

They are catching a lot of sockeye and they are starting to catch some kings.

went yesterday...hooked 9 landed 6. also caught a 8lb steelie. plenty of boats up there. What is awesome to see is all the kids up there "hogging" in sockeye. great to see people taking their kids and getting them into the action. Saw a little boy fighting a fish, he could barely see over the side of the boat.

Very true woody.  6-9 is a hell of an average compared to 6-35+ the day before for the two youngsters in my boat!  Between rebaiting hooks and swapping out leaders, I didn't even have time for a cold one.

What are you guys catching them with?  My buddy bought a new boat and we are thinking about going this weekend but we have never fished for sockeyes.

Dang - nice fish! Makes me jealous! Never fished up in that part of the Columbia before but would like to head up there. I was fishing for Kings in Area 7 (San Juans) this last weekend and got skunked. My 9yo hooked a 3ft dogfish (or shark of some sort) and I got a little ling mooching up 10' from the bottom - but no 'nookies... We did get about 30 plus pounds of crab though! Freaking 38 nice Dungy's and about a dozen good sized Red Rocks in all!

the game checkers do that cause they were hatchery, there is a tag implanted inside the head on all the hatchery, so the game checkers take them for a research project

got to thinking and figured it was the nose tag, after we get through cherries we are going to hit up the wells pool for some sockeye mind giving a guy any idea of how deep they are running?

I wondered about that myself - I just figured it was your special way of cleaning them! Well geez - there goes the idea of having them mounted huh!  (I know, they could still do it using pics and/or measurements...)

They are checking for coded-wire tags (CWTs). CWTs have a 6 digit number identifying which hatchery that fish  came from. Also, they could be removing otoliths from them. Otoliths can be used to tell age, type of hatchery, water quality, etc. Otoliths can be marked with various changes in teh water. Very interesting.

Fished again today. Hammered them from 7-8, was running king gear from 430-7AM and lost 5 sockeye on king gear. caught 1. at 8 we headed to wells and caught a few more sockeye and a jack. Great day on the water. and a hot one too. now its dumping buckets. literally.

Anyone have any recent reports from the brewster pool?  Will be up there this weekend for the salmon derby.  Not expecting huge success in the derby but more of a learning experience.

Just got back from my folks house in Pateros.  I was a bit late for the hot sockeye run.  The Okanogan cooled off and the Monse fish counter said a bunch of greenheads shot up that next morning.  All in all was a great break to spend time on the water with friends, dodge boats, and put some nice meat in the freezer for the winter.  We put around 38 socks in the boat over the vacation and 1 king who got confused and bit my sock gear.  Here is hoping to another good run next year, and to me planning my vacation a little better.

On a side note, it was good to get back over on the dry side for awhile fish or no fish.
