yep, they eat the cambium layer (sap wood), high in sugar content after the winter, as a forester I have to deal with this a lot, they destroy and kill lots of Douglas Fir trees, when they girdle the tree, it will most llikely die and when they just take a portion of the bark off it will cause damage in the tree which will affect the end result of the quality of the tree
Old hunters never die, they just stay loaded.
