Bear hunting in the Kapowsin Tree Farm this season
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:00:56 PM »
I work for the DNR in the Elbe, Ashford and Mineral area and we have a major bear problem in a few areas.  Our biggest problem is just above the Ashford Grocery Store where the new park is located.  This is the Hancock 45 road and the bear problem is located on the DNR 451 road.  If you enter the 45 road through the gate it is about 1/4 mile and you take the first left road.  The road is starting to get over grown, but if you continue you will see lots of dead trees from bear peels.  Permit holders can either come over the top through the tree farm  or I believe check in at the gate on the Kapowsin side and drive around and hike in from the Ashford gate.  The problem has been there for at least 4 years and is only getting worse.  I know for sure there is several good size bears located in that area, they are destroying approximately 60 % + of our Douglas Fir plantations in that area.  I am currently in the process of trying to put together a Spring bear hunt for the Elbe and Tahoma State forests.  This process seems to take a while, so hopefully you permit holders can hit the 451 road and kill a few of these bears before I get the spring hunt put together.  Let me know if you need any further information or directions, I am happy to help.

I have a Snoqualmie Hancock permit and I am shocked they don't offer a spring hunt in that area. Every year we are seeing more and more bear. The peels are REALLY bad this year, there are some roads where it is peeled tree after peeled tree. I have been up there about 5 times this summer and have seen one or more bear everytime I go up just by them running across the road, who knows how many I would see if I would take the time to glass the clearcuts.

Yeah it is getting really bad for the timber companys, including the DNR, I know when I worked for The Campbell group In kapowsin Tree Fram we had bait stations plus spring bear hunts,  but I'm not sure if Handcock does anything in the Snoqualmie, to tell you the truth I'm not sure If handcock really cares, they won't own it much longer anyways, but for sure it's becoming a big problem.

thanks Joe, the problem is bad, I would say as a forest manager it is near an epidemic in that certain area, not exaggerating at all, they have peeled either partially or entirely peeled at least sixty percent or more of the planted Douglas Fir Trees.  PM me and I can give you some more spacifics on the area.

Do you have to have a permit to get in there? Can you walk in if you don't have a permit?

most subsidiary companies such as Hancock are not in it for the long run, they are in it for the quick money and to get out, portions have already been sold off and will keep being sold off, they are in the business to cut trees and make mney for their "owners", once the trees are gone, the "owners" wil be gone and Hancock will be gone as well, hancock is the timber manager, they manage the timber, once the timber no longer make a profit to the may owners, they will be gone, thats just how private timber gows now adays

I know how it all works, I know quite well that the "privat" as well as the state and federal managers are in it for the money.  thats one of the reasons that the DNR and the WDFW are switching some lands.  Cant make money on timber, trade it with another agency.  The Private guys are the same, they make what they can, then get out.  I also know the ins and outs of Hancock personally.  Thats why I asked the question.

Tried to get there today from Hancock side and ran into a new gate. Could not get there after putting many miles on dirt roads, VERY disappointing.
