Powder storage?
« on: July 26, 2010, 12:30:48 PM »
What are you using to store power? When I only loaded 12ga trap and 30-06 it was no brainier. Now that I'm loading .223 to 45-70 and 28ga to 10ga I have a lot of powder around, close to 30 lbs. SAMMI says you need a wooden container that has 1" wall thickness and wheels, why wheels? I'm looking into getting some surplus Hazmat containers from Boeing, but are they the right thing?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I just built a wooden shelf in the corner...somewhat camouflaged and out of the way.
This way I only have one open container near the bench at a time--minimize chances of mistakes.

Seems to work just fine, as my father does the exact same thing and he's just finishing up some of his powder from the mid 80's that is still A-Okay!
I left it better than I found it...did you?

havent start loading rifle shells yet but i load 12 20 28 and 410 shotshells all with different powders. built a shelf above the reloading bench high out of reach of any little hands and animals (i reload in the garage). i make sure to neatly peel off the seal so i can use it again. put the seal back on the spout and make sure that the cap is on tight. havent had any problems.

A plastic container in front of the window works best.   :dunno:  I just have a wooden storage shelf with doors that I set it in.  A metal cabinet that is grounded probably would be fine as well.  Friction and heat are what you are trying to avoid.  Most of your powders are fairly stable these days unless using black powder or so it seems.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
