He's shooting a 7mm 08 with a fixed 4x forward mounted scope. Its actually kind of a neat gun for close distances/smaller game with the exception of its weight. The gun is a beast. I swear its about 14 pounds which seems a little excessive for a brush gun. The nice thing about it is with the short length and that scope you shoot it like a shotgun.  Close distance runners don't stand half a chance....

14lbs? you're exagerating right? that's about what a Remington Sendero weights with optics.

I can see that my younger, less successful brother (almost kidding!), has answered the question me...with near accuracy even!!! That however, is pretty much all you can expect from him...near accuracy. Just ask! I don't know anyone who has missed more big bears in the last few years than him. In fact, Huckleberry how many did you miss this week?

The rifle is a Ruger M77 Frontier in 7mm-08 with a forward mounted fixed 2.5 power leupold scout scope. It is basically a poor mans version of a Styer Scout rifle. I opted to purchase the Ruger rather than drop a mortgage payment to get on a waiting list for a Styer. I also opted not to try to fashion my own, out of say a Moisin Nagant, as I have seen on the net several times. I opted for a 7mm-08 rather than a .308 because IMO it shoots flatter and is more forgiving. I believe it is also available in .338.

My brother is right, it is heavy. Not 14 lbs heavy, but maybe 7 1/2 lbs. Ruger claims it's 6 lbs w/o a scope, but I think they're a hair liberal with that claim. The laminate stock accounts for the weight, but I think it's pretty for a cheap factory gun. 

I absolutely love this set up. It's a great brush gun, short and compact. It's like shooting a shotgun; fast target acquisition with both eyes open is possible. I have shot many an animal on the run, many shot that I believe I would not have made with a traditional set up. I've never taken a shot over 100 yards with it (except at the range), and have successfully taken several Javelina, Coyote, Bobcat, Mule Deer and Bear.  I'll be taking it to Wyoming this October for antelope.  I must say that I do get a lot of questions about it when I run into people in the field. I always thought brush guns would be more popular, especially in Western Washington where the brush is so thick, but I guess not.

As much as my oldest brother clindsayrun wants to clown on my middle brother huckleberry, someone has to remember he lives in eastern washington where turkeys run rampid and has still never killed one.. Now being the youngest, I'm not claiming to be a good hunter when it comes to big game, as a matter of fact I'll be the first to admit I SUCK.... Someday I will kill my first deer, or bear, or elk, or anything. However I'm one hell of a good bird hunter.. Other than turkey which in the 5 years I've hunted, I've only killed 7...

Now however I have to agree with Ryan when he say's your guns heavy as hell... For such a small gun its like carrying a lead bar.. However you shoot it well and have gotten some good animals... I talked to your wife, she threatened me when I told her I was going to show her the picture of your cat...You might be hunting out of your car from now on.. I'm sorry......
