I use a 2 weight rod.  Its probably about 6'5 or so.   Its smaller for the brush and makes the little ones seem like whales.

great, thanks. i was using a 6 weight 8' rod and thought that was too big for small creeks. i'll look around for a used one probably. caught a 9.5" Brookie out of this creek here on a worm, wanted to try it with a fly.

Essentially the strength of the rod, as you increase in number, the bigger the rod is and the bigger fish it could catch in short.  5 weight is the "average" size.  higher than  that is stealhead into salmon.   My trout rod is a 3 and a 4.   My salmon rod is a 9.

I love my 7 foot 3 weight.  don't go bigger than a three weight if you can help it.  You loose to much of the fun of small stream trout.
