Its one of the heaviest hunted units in the state, and camping is not allowed by the timber companies.

Wow, guess that answers my question...lol.  Had planned on hunting the Winston unit for early archery and put some time in scouting it.  After reading for the past few weeks it seems like 520 is pretty crowded to.  Trying to find somewhere that allows camping and has a decent number of animals.

I have family in the GMU and we always camped on their property during season when I was younger.  It's still my GMU of choice but only because I know it so well.  Over the last 4-5 years there have been more and more people hunting it. It's almost like the new Winston Creek, only not as many elk.

As far as camping goes, you'll have to find a pay to stay campground most of the time, or find someone with some property to let you camp there.

Good luck with the crowds!  :dunno:

You can camp on DNR land, but make sure you are on DNR. The timber companies will kick you out and so will the gamies. Wearhouser Land, you have to watch for it being closed due to fire danger. I haven't checked this year, as I'm not going. The big wind storms of a couple a years ago really messed up timber that the elk always used. Good luck.
