looking for archery elk partner(s)

I've never elk hunted before.  I wanted to learn from someone and help them out but, nobody wanted me  .  It's ok.  I understand.  Well, I figure the only way to go about this is to buy a tag and hit it.  Only problem is, I don't know what I'm hitting.  I just bought my tag and I will be hunting Westside archery.  I was honing in on GMU 673 just south of Raymond but, I am open to peoples advice.  I will only be hunting weekends, Sept. 7-8 and 18-19.  All of my vacation is booked elsewhere.  I live in Shelton and work in Bremerton.  I've been told there are elk in my own backyard around Shelton but, I don't know where to find them?  PM's welcome.

check out the areas around elbie, and the skookumchuck gmu. get out there now. i dont know much about the oly penn. there is a good amount of public land out there in skookumchuck. just gota find the access. last year i hunted it and i had bulls around me the whole time

You have a little bit of a learning curve ahead of you, but it will all be fun. I started hunting for elk about 5 years ago...modern then muzzle loader then archery. I haven't killed an elk yet, but have had many close encounters and many screw ups and for the most part I am self taught. My advice is to read whatever you can get your hands on (books, videos - ASP specifically, websites like this), spend as much time in the elk woods as you can during the season and offseason, talk to other hunters when you're back at your truck or whenever you bump into someone who wants to share some knowledge, learned how to call and finally get dialed in shooting your bow. I can't say its all come together for me yet, but I am getting close and it will be the same for you if you really want to make it happen.

Thanks guys.  I've been google maping the 667 unit by elbe as suggested.  There looks like some goo terrain there.  Steep and hard to get to.  I'm assuming that's where I need to be.

Elk don't like people, but they do like clearcuts......which aren't always very steep or hard to get to. Since you are hunting the West side don't overlook gated timber company land which usually holds a fair number of elk.

Anyone volunteer to take a PM with a couple of maps to point me in the right direction?  Generic maps that just show terrain and stuff, no specifics, and see if I'm looking in the right spots?
