Long day!
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:18:04 PM »
I'm tired. Got up at 3am and drove out to the coast. Started salmon fishing and crabbing in the Columbia, with no luck at salmon, but did limit on crabs. So then we headed across the bar and into the Pacific. No luck for a while out there, only had a few bites in the first hour. Then... fish on! 'Nother fish on! And another! Once the bite got hot we were having fun. Too bad most of the fish got off or had to be thrown back for being native and not hatchery. The biggest fish of the day didn't get landed either... at least not by us. We saw it and thought, oh shi... Put the boat in reverse and tried to get over the salmon asap, but the next time we saw it that damn sea lion had it in its mouth. Same thing happend to a nearby boat less than five minutes later. They had a nice king too! At least until it got stolen. Have lots of crab, one mature coho and a couple jacks. I know what I'm eating tomorrow! And now my day can finally end and get some much needed sleep. Even six hours later, though, I still feel like I'm on the boat. Still rocking, still swaying... I'm buzzed lol.

Pics to come later

I still think the indians should go sealion hunting. Wouldn't hear one bad word from hunters or fishermen for a change.

Went out again yesterday, stayed in the river this time. Morning was very slow, saw only a few nets coming out. Afternoon picked up a bit, think we went 9/17 total. Had the biggest steelhead I've seen caught, but was a native and let go. Also had two wild coho released. Got my biggest 'nook and took two salmon home :)

photo edited to protect location, not my place to give away his spots.

Sweet!
Do you crab in the river?  I have always wanted to try it but never have.  We use to dump in pots in Grays Harbor while fishing for kings and did well.

We crabbed on Wednesday and got our limit easily. Chicken was stripped bare pretty quick.
