Some blue grouse info from you east siders.
« on: August 25, 2010, 09:29:59 AM »
Fellas,
Looking for some road info to get me close to some blue grouse country north of Cle Elum or up hwy 97/970.
I normally do chukar on the east (columbia river), and ruffed on the west side of the mountains (mineral - morton). Twisp area and the likes is a HAUL for me to say the least. Just looking for some tips on access points and areas closer to CE, or the pass. I have been up 97 a couple times, but not really sure which roads systems to take. East of 97 or west of 97. Kachess lake area? etc.. any tips are of course appreciated  ;) My hunting partner and I don't mind working for the birds, just need a nudge in the right direction. Thanks again for any info!

Get a map and go up high to the berry patches and you can usually find them. Not trying to be a smarta$$ but that has always worked for me....Oh get a bear tag and take a rifle with you..you know..just in case.
Just one more day

Get some elevation like above 3500 feet. Always been birds around Table mountain. Main roads for gravel, old log roads or less traveled. They like it along the edges of ridges with drop offs. Ruffed  are down lower. No warranty expressed or implied.

I saw about 20 blues in one day on USFS land near Salmon la Sac a couple weeks ago. You don't really need to go that far, just need to go high in elevation. I hunt the Snoqualmie Tree Farm in North Bend and the lower portion is all Ruffed's and the higher portion is all Blues. You can almost draw a line in the road system as far as what species of grouse will be where.
