I here that the river from Wanapum up is now single barbless hookes and knotless nets for all fish. It might be a little harder to land them kings for this fall run.  :'(

I think it's rumor.
Atleast until January 1st. ;)

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?

Usually if steelhead opens up and hatchery harvest can be done with the release of wild steelhead then it has become "selective gear rules" in areas i have seen. Which is basically a single barbless hooks, so yes hanging onto the kings (since it is open as well) is going to be tight lines - come or bleed. My view is to let the salmon fishery end, then open steelhead. Salmon up here (rocky reach to chief joe) is open for 3-1/2 months (July to Oct 15th +-) while the steelhead goes 5 to 6 months. If they want hatchery out of the system then take them out at the dams / hatcheries.

yeah its true saw a notice in hooked on toys the other day while getting steelhead gear, also checked the DFW site and its there as well. yeah landing salmon will be a little bit harder but hey it is what it is but why take hatchery steelheads out at the dams and hatcheries and pay people to do it when you can have anglers pay to do it and why should we allow the DFW to limit yet another sporting opprotunity by having them remove hatchery steelhead?

selective gear starts at priest rapids dam all the way up to cheif joe - (def- page 19 of the manuel) except bait is allowed in the mainstem columbia... be careful - not fun getting ticketed and surely not worth it ..  FYI - you should sign up for the email notices at WDFW..  here is what i got on Sept 3rd via email - http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/release.php?id=sep0310a
