Idaho Gov. Butch Otter met Tuesday with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar with an eye on speeding up the feds’ response to a court decision ending Idaho’s management of wolves.

The deadline is exactly one month after Otter’s meeting with Salazar.
Otter already sent a letter to Salazar asking the Interior Department to grant Idaho the power to manage wolves. If the governor gets his way, it could potentially lead to a sanctioned hunt of wolves, though wildlife advocates question that possibility.
Otter and Idaho Department Fish and Game (IDFG) officials disagree with the Aug. 5 federal court ruling that ended IDFG’s power to manage wolves, as well as a move by the conservation group Defenders of Wildlife (Defenders) to end a compensation program for ranchers whose animals are killed or injured by wolves.
Defenders’ officials have said that federal funds can replace the wolf compensation money.
