Found a wallow. Hunt it or not?
« on: September 13, 2010, 09:33:44 AM »
While basically road hunting with my oldest son Friday night, we found a REALLY nice wallow.  It was a small creek pouring into what was basically a damed up section, forming a pond that was about 3 ft deep and 10 in diameter.  Around that, in every direction was pretty deep mud that streched out about 15 ft in all directions from the pond.  In this mud were multiple tracks of what looked like elk, deer, bear, coyote, every possible animal in the area.

I have one day left to hunt, last day of the season.  Should I hunt this wallow or go find a clearcut somewhere?  What time of day do elk like to use wallows?  I'd assume middle of the day but I'm not sure.  Should I just get to it and park myself over it at 5 am and sit there all day?

Go for it.  I just called in a 370 bull yesterday next to a wallow.  There's a good story there.  I'll post it on another thread of it's own as soon as I get the pictures sent to me from the guy that took them.  No pics of the 370 bull, but got pics of another in the same spot.

Let the weather decide for you. If it is hot and dry then hunt it, if not then don't.  :twocents:

Hunt it!!! - they don't wallow just because it's hot.  They also wallow to cover themselves in that stinky urine/mud/water mixture and to cool off.  Hunt it!
