been shooting 300yds the last three days.
« on: October 11, 2010, 08:06:31 PM »
Well I made it a point to go shoot 300+ before season. I was shooing the .338 win and the .243 at the 10x10 plate at 300yds the last three days and I think that my guns are dialed in now. Off hand with no sticks or rest I can hit the plate every shot and off a rest I get about a 1.5" group with the .338 win :IBCOOL:. The 243 makes about a 3" group but the wind was blowing a little off and on when I shot it.

Man I know the feeling I'm fighting the other .243 my dad has. We just got it to group at 100yds today, I spent three days of shooting to get it to shoot a .5" group at 100yds after changing the scope and then the ammunition 3 times. My .338 and .243 both love my hand loads but my dads doesnt it will only shoot the factory ammo. Im thinking of trying completly diff bullet and powders to get it to where my .243 is.

wow dude you must be an ex sniper or somthing because shooting at 300 yards off hand and hitting a 10 x 10 plate consistantly is very extreme shooting :)  You are a very skilled shot. good luck this year and keep up the good shooting!

Sounds like a good place to start! also maybe weigh the round (cases if possible) first step to match rounds. Good luck

lol I have my moments I cant hit a yote at 20yds. I have always had a skill at shooting and shot my 22lr alot at longer rang to keep my trigger skills up. I really think its all in shooting a rifle a lot, Ive spent the last 5 years building my rifle up so I could do this and I still have more to do. I believe if Im going to shoot at a animal at those distances I need to be able to kill it first shot.

All my brass is the same wieght I just think that the 95gr bullets where not what the gun liked. It shoots the 80-85gr factory loads so the twist might have had a bit to do with it.

No big deal  :dunno:

I have a 10"x10" plate at 300 yards and I can hit it 20 out of 20 times off hand with any of my guns

...As long as I'm only 5 feet away from it  :yike: :chuckle:  :tung:

So went to shooting 600yds and the .338 is just flat accurate 5round down the tube and they all found there mark:) now the 243 was having problems with the wind but I was dead on just left thanks to the wind. I did hit it the last two shots once the wind died down a little.

WOW :yike:

Just so I'm clear.  Scenario; 300 yards, 10 inch target, off hand, and every shot is a hit?

1.5" at 300 yards = awesome gun, remarkable shooter, perfect ammo, and a barrel keeping close to the same temperature.  I'm going to have to pull my data books and see how tight my groups were at 300 - I can tell you they were no 1.5".

Maybe next time I'm in your neck of the woods we'll have to do a little shooting - bring some money! :chuckle:

It's all a matter of how much you shoot. My neighbor shoots 45-70 and 45-90 black powder out to 880 yrds open sights, with a rest though. He does have off hand matches that they shoot quite a distance also and he usually does great. He also shoots like there is no tomorrow and has all his components dialed in exact weights.
