A memorable opener...
« on: October 14, 2010, 05:33:16 PM »
Heading to Wenatchee to meet up with friends opening weekend, I hit a deer on the highway doing 65 and totaled my jeep.  We got into some huns and a few quail east of Wenatchee, but didn't see any chukars.  We also hunted the hills along the river, and only saw one covey, with two setters working.  Tough going.  I mostly hunt the John Day in central OR. (where I see 5-8 coveys a day) because I just can't seem to find any chukars here in WA.  I see there are some in Yakima, and I hear the Quilomene and Chelan areas have some, but so far it's been rough going.  I've hunted 4-5 days so far in WA. and have only seen one covey.  Pretty sad.  Anyone have any suggestions so I don't have to drive five hours to Oregon?

Oh, and I ended up getting a newer and much nicer jeep out of the deal, so it turned out well.  Thank God for good insurance.

I've been asking the same question. I don't know exactly where to go but from the Harvest Report these are the top counties for Chukar: Chelan, Douglas, Kittitas, Yakima, Okanogan, Asotin, and Grant in that order.  From my experience they seem to love the nasty rocky spots the best and tended to always hang out on the other side of those outcrops.  According to these stats it looks like it gets better up towards the Entiat and continues that way up along the Columbia ?  Once you find them with any regularity then it must be habitat and cover that's keeping them there.  Sorry I'm not much help other than that.  Mileage may be the only answer for now.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one.  Chukars are my favorite, but I'll be chasing pheasants tomorrow with my new setter just to get him into some birds.

I'm driving from Tacoma.

Hopefully, you are hunting your pheasants in Western WA; as the Eastern WA pheasant season doesn't open until 10/23.

Good luck.
