too cold forpup to sleep outside?
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:52:30 AM »
my 4 month old gsp in an outside dog,  i have i big kennel for her and a doghoude that i filled with cedar shavings,  but lately its getting chilly ouside,  (frost every morning).  should i bring the god in for the night?  i would have the dog indoor all the time if i could, but i currently live with my inlaws, and they don't like having animals in their house.  i'm working on making her a heated doghouse, but for the next couple day i might have to bring her in,  or do i have nothing to worry about?       the reason i'm asking is she got sick on tuesday, she's vomiting/diarea/ and hasent touched her food for two days, she did drink though,  at first i thought if i gave her a day she would get over it,  but this morning she looked alot worse,  and looks like she vomited a little bit more at night, (or might be really watery diarea)  i'm not sure whats the cause of this all, but i was thinking it might be that its too cold for her,

one more thing, on monday while i was at work my 3 year old nephew filled her food dish with different dog food from what she usually eats, and adter that the problems started,  could it be a reaction to the different food?       my wife is gonna take Ruby to the vet today, and i have no idae what to expect for a vet bill,  but i'm pretty sure it waill be worth it.

Good idea to take her to the vet.  Could be Parvo.  I have heard too many times of pups having those symptoms and people waiting too long to get them to the vet.

As far as being too cold, as long as she has a good insulated dog house she will be fine.  You could hook up a heat lamp when the temps really drop.

A change of food is probably the #1 reason a dog will vomit or get the *censored*s. My last lab had a very sensitive stomach. It didn't take much and she'd squirt for a week.

i was thinking that too, but would it cause loss of apitite?  she hasn't ate at all since then and looks really really weak

Could be many things especially with a pup.  They will sometimes eat about anything they find.  Some friends lab had similar symptoms not too long ago and by the time they got him to the vet he was very weak.  Ended up that he had eaten one of his toys (don't recall what it was) and hit messed his guts up.  He didn't survive the surgery because he was so weak.

Not trying to scare you but it is always a good idea to get them checked out ASAP.

Had one in Alaska.  Brought him in when it got below 20.  Otherwise he was good to go.  No heated dog house.  They are tougher than you think.  Just keep a good blanket or bed of dry shavings in the dog house.   :twocents:
