Blacktail Question
« on: October 20, 2010, 11:36:36 AM »
Hey guys, I think I've found a decent spot in unit 407, Whatcom County, but I'm new to Blacktail hunting and would like to get some advice.  I found a spot, which is gated and off the roads, and it doesn't get alot of pressure.  You have to go in about 4 miles.  Anyway, I've been focusing on the deep timber well off the logging roads and I'm seeing a moderate amount of tracks and droppings.  I spotted one buck the day before the opener and that has been it.  Because I'm new to hunting these little ghosts, is moderate amounts of sign normal?  I guess I'm thinking I should see more sign, which means more deer or is this normal for Blacktails?  Also, they don't seem to be using any defined trails.  Their tracks seem to be uphill or downhill but no defined trails.  Conditions lately have been very dry, making moving through the woods tough.  I don't seem to be seeing a lot of fresh tracks.  Thanks in advance.

Hey I am a new blacktail hunter as well.  I have been hunting in skagit county near lake cavanaugh.  I have seen a few signs as well, but unlike you I haven't seen one deer yet, buck or doe.  They really don't seem to use trails.  We are supposed to be getting some rain tomorrow so I will be hunting again tomorrow.  I think that there aren't as many signs with BT because of the way they move, they move off trail and in thick areas.  I have seen droppings that have got caught in the bushes they were standing next to, and in real thick stuff.  There sign is really hard to pick up.  I am trying to figure out where they move in and out of the trees.

Can you say nocturnal with the full moon we got going on now!!
