My first elk/bull!!!
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:24:34 PM »
I will keep this short. We went to Montana back in September and had 8 days of wind, rain, and unstable weather. On day 9 it started to get better. On the last day, day 10, it was perfect as you can see! We heard this guy several hundred yards away so we made a play at him. As we got closer, my hunting partner would cow call, the bull would bugle. We did this until he was within 200 yards. I set up as my friend was about 60 yards behind me. As the elk was moving towards me (couldn't see him only hear him,) my friend could see where it sounded like he would show up, which wasn't good, so he moved calling location in hopes to bring the bull to a better shooting lane, and it worked great.

As the bull got closer I could see his antlers first, I drew my bow and he kept walking and walking. He stopped broadside at 18 yards. I focused on my top pin (18 yards away) and let it fly. It was like the arrow flew in slow-mo. I could see the veins spinning and then heard the impact. I could see I made a perfect shot. The bull hunched up and began running. Cow calling quickly ensued from my friend and I. The bull stopped and looked back our direction as his legs went out from under him. I shot him at 8:10am, and he expired at 8:11am. He went a total of 20 yards from point of impact with a double lung shot from a Thunderhead 100.

This was a great hunt for me. It was my first elk, first bull, and first big game animal taken with a bow. I had great hunting partners to share the trip with and couldn't have asked for a better result.
