custom 10/22 ?

with a couple 10/22's in the safe now, i've been thinking of taking one and doing some sort of custom stuff to it and was wondering if anybody has any input or experiences with whats good and not good. here's what i know...i don't think i can justify putting volquartsen stuff on due to the cost, and i don't think i want butler creek junk...i have been looking at tactical solutions barrels, hogue overmolded stocks, etc. i don't like the look of the space age looking thumbhole boyds style stocks, and i don't really want to go the bullpup or folding stock route...with that said...what do you know?

not so much concerned with the stock. that is a real nice stock and one that i have been considering. i was more curious to know if anyone had any experience with specific barrels and all the other little stuff like recoil buffers and the trigger kits, bolt releases, etc.
i have looked at tactical solutions barrels, whistle pig barrels, butler creek barrels, threaded, not threaded, compensated, not compensated...blah blah blah.

You can do the auto bolt release yourself if you have a dremel tool--save a few bux.
GM barrels are the way to go--but they're out of stock pretty much everywhere at the moment. Give it a month or two and they'll trickle back in. They've been busy building barrels for other firearms.
A little work with the factory trigger group and you can get it down pretty low (and crisp). Stoning the hammer is the biggest key. Polish the trigger plunger and drill/tap the trigger for an over-travel screw.
A stock 10/22 with a $100 barrel, the barrel channel opened up, and some free (time consuming) trigger work will amaze a lot of people with it's accuracy--and you'll save a few hundred bucks over those other "10/22 Ultimates" you run across. A true sleeper.
Oh yes, weaponkraft for the bolt buffer. VQ extractor is a good (cheap) investment as well.

I had one of the gattling gun kits, They are a pain in the ass
I wouldn't bother with compensating, you can't even tell. midway used to have a deal for stock and barrel kits that were OK, very accurate.
For the most part just a trigger job makes a huge difference.

I have one Jack. I don't have any pics of it. I might have one of my daughter shooting it. I'll see if I can pull them out.

I built two and there is a wealth (overload?) of knowledge as well as some pictures for do it yourself upgrades on rimfirecentral.com.
My experience with GreenMountain is a beautifull custom stainless fluted barrel that was pretty easy to install, did not seat subsonic bullets and I got light hammerstrikes and the gun wouldn't run.
Greenmountain sent me a return auth and said they reamed it to spec.
Still doesn't run and is not all that accurate, compared to my CZ bolt action(crazy, stupid accurate)
You can buy some pretty slick pieces to do your own trigger work, but as mentioned previously, some 1000 grit sandpaper and judicious polishing will do alot.
If you buy a custom barrel and it adds any weight at all, find a new V-block with the elevation screw tapped into it.
You will get barrel sag as the stock aluminum receiver is not all that strong and the barrel will droop and you'll run out of scope adjustment.
Let me know if you have other questions, I'm not an expert but have some experience.
Good luck.
Dan
