first aid for porcupine quiils
« on: October 27, 2010, 11:17:59 AM »
Went hunting last weekend and found no birds but our lab found a porcupine.  We were able to get most the quills out but it looks like he has a red spot in between his toes.

Is there something we can do to get it to work its way out?

Thanks

Hit the farm store buy some novalsan and clean and rinse for a few days. Keep a close eye on it. If you think something is still in there just go to the vet and have it removed. Its still cheaper because you did most of the work yourself. If there is something in there and you wait too long and get it infected you'll regret not doing it sooner. You're dog won't be hunting, it will be wearing a lamp shade on its head while you go out for birds.

In my experiance with this. The quills work their way in deeper and not out. I would keep on eye on the dog and call the vet if it starts to look infected or the dog starts to favor the foot. The vet told me once that the quills will work their way in deeper and can get into major blood vessels and tendons and can cause a lot of damage. Good Luck

If it was one of my dogs, I would just go see the vet! Ouch on the bill, but will probably be better in the long run. Peace of mind too! My Chessy rolled in a dead porky and got covered in quills. My friend and I were able to get them all out thank goodness. I was on her right away and they did notsink in deep for the most part. We pulled 20 some out of her that day. Only a few required the leatherman needle nose pliers to get out!
