I think what PB is frustrated at as well as myself are so many guys putting in who really don't care to hunt any of those species

Well if that's the case I can understand the frustration, but I just assumed that anybody who took the time and spent the money, even if it's only $5, to apply, actually DID want to hunt that species. Do you guys really think there are that many people applying for permits that they don't want?

There could be that many folks bobcat, I have heard of some groups that buy up licenses and put in for tags and don't even hunt at all, I don't know how true it is but it is a strategy the anti's would come up with for sure.

I have also ran into a few hunters that have said they put some of the hunts down on their application just to fill up the spaces, I told them I thought that was BS and why, I don't know if they continue to do it but I am quite sure there are more folks out there that do it.

I only put in for tags I have a genuine interest in using weather or not I have hunted there or not, If I get the tag I will use it and work real hard so it is not wasted. I really like to explore new areas so I put in for them hoping I get the opportunity to expand my horizons so to speak !! If not I will go somewhere I have hunted before.

The way it sounded is that PB thought I was a yayhoo for doing that and that is not right either, sorry if I got confused or read your post wrong !!

No I don't think you read my post wrong. I was just trying to say that I see nothing wrong with what you do, because I do it myself. I will apply for hunts in units that I have never seen. That seems to bother some people. I'm not sure why. I'm like you in that I enjoy hunting new areas, and besides, just about any permit hunt you can get will be better than a general season hunt. I think everybody who hunts should take full advantage of the special permit hunts and apply for all that they can. Now having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing an increase in the application fee just to keep the applicant numbers down a bit, especially for the once-in-a-lifetime species. I think $20 per species would be reasonable. I would also like to see a quota on the number of permits going to non-residents.

It does make sense that you would be allowed to use a "lesser" weapon, but I just don't see where the law allows it. It does say under modern firearm seasons that you "may use modern firearm, archery, or muzzleloader," but if you look under archery seasons it says "archery only" and under muzzleloader seasons it says "muzzleloader only."

I honestly didn't think you could hunt with your bow during the muzzelloader hunt.  I know you can in Modern, but not in anotehr primitive weapon season.  I don't think you can flip flop those.

Wow!.. I learn'ed somethin new.
I always thought you could trade down. I guess they consider archery and ML the same?

That is what frustrates me. I put in for one elk permit and usually only two deer and two or three on the OIL, but what pss's me off is when someone gets drawn on their fourth choice for the only unit I applied for, then they don't even know where to start scouting or how to hunt the unit.

Thats what I was referring too.  Not applying for someplace you haven't hunted before as I obvciosuly do that all the time.  Once again, easily solved if they moved it to two choices or....one choice and then the second only counts if the that unit isn't filled up.

i don't like the idea of only one or two choices. most of the time i have more places i want to hunt then they give me choices for. and if people want to put in for areas they have never hunted chances are they will not be successfully other than pure luck.

and how about this. You draw then you can not draw the next year, but you can purchase a ghost point. You keep gaining points and F&G keeps getting the permit ap money.

I like that, it would seem to help the odds a little. I don't know how much it would help the really tough to get tags like margret, quinault and entiat.

Maybe go back to the way it was. If you put in for special permits you didn't get to hunt untill wednesday. If you draw you can't put in for a year or two.

They want more of your money than that. Hell, I am surprised they dont charge more for each sucessive year you apply. (Maybe I shouldn't have said that...)

Most people that draw those tags have 20+ points anyways so I don't know what it will take to help those odds. :dunno:
