Hunter ed?
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:10:18 PM »
A buddy just got a piece of land that happens to be open for the late bow season, and he has always wanted to hunt.  I was hoping take him hunting (I have mod. rifle tag, so I can't actually hunt) right before christmas, but unfortunately he doesn't done hunter ed yet.  WDFW website says there is only one class left this year in the whole state, and apparently it is filled.  Anyone have any ideas?  Located in Seattle.

I have only had a license for 2 years, so he can't do the one time exemption thing.

Since I haven't filled my tag for Modern rifle, would it be possible for me to trade in my tag for an archery tag if I paid something extra?  I know the reason that you can't do it is so you can't hunt multiple seasons, but what I was willing to pay for a whole new license?  If there are no options on classes, I think my buddy would be happy to go along even if he couldn't actually hunt.

Thanks

Try getting ahold of kenmore gun club or the american legen in bothell they both have classes , if you can get a few people who want to take it the legen should give you a class . If you need a shooter I may know one or two  ;)

Great, thanks, I'll check in Bothel and Kenmore.  I might be able to scrounge up one or two more people.

Unfortunately he's 22...just missed the cutoff.

Is this area open to the late modern season as well but just firearm restricted by chance?  That would give you a chance to hunt it still.

The only option you have is to put in a Differment application which let you differ hunters ed for one year....once in a lifetime, as long as the person is hunting with someone who has held a license for the last 3 years in the state of WA. Doesn't mean it has to be you...could be another hunter you know or maybe someone you can even find on here...sounds like this is your only option. The application is on the WDFW site and takes about 2 weeks to get approved...then your buddy would be able to go buy his license in two weeks assuming they accept the application. I believe it is $20 to apply.

I just transferred my hunter safety from Tennessee up here, it was super easy. I also took the online course here without studying a lick and passed it, but up here is a 3 part series. And if you were in the military you are exempt from guns safety. So there is written exam, gun safety and handling and some kind of and attitude course? Whatever, i got mine transferred so its all good now. ;)

interesting...are there any other states that don't have a classroom requirement?  If so, could he just get the certification there and then transfer it to Washington?

Also, about the military exemption that was mentioned--what is that?  Another friend wants to come along now, and he is still in the military.  Is there a way for him to get it?

I would do this if you can! The differmant plan is a good way to see if he likes it, then he can go for the class next year.
