My First Bull! / Father-Daughter Double!
«

This year I had the opportunity to hunt on a local landowner's private property. Being raised in the Willapa Hills has provided me lots of opportunities to hunt elk, however, the craziness that goes with it has prevented me from ever killing a bull. It becomes a little discouraging when at shooting light it sounds like a war-zone... ANYWAY! I was SO BLESSED this year and shortly before shooting light my best hunting buddy and I (my dad) made our way out and just barely saw the very bright bull elk bedded next to the trees. We belly-crawled our way across a dike and set-up to wait until we could put antlers on it. At about 15 minutes after shooting light I took him in the shoulder with my dad's Browning A-Bolt 300WSM. All my other animals I've taken with my 7mm 08, but this was a 240 yard shot, and well, better be safe than sorry. I guess the only regret using his rifle would be the big yellow bruise above my left eye
We switched back rifles and made our way over to it. After we confirmed it was definitely dead my dad made his way over to where he saw the elk cross a swamp and squatted down. I guess you could say I ran around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to decide whether or not he could see them or if I should circle around and push them to him. In the end he shot the other bigger bull in the herd. Funny thing is that he got the one I was trying to explain was the bigger one earlier. I had really wanted to shoot it, but decided I could take a safer shot at the one I got because it was toward the rear. I did get the bigger one, but man his has some pretty big and deceiving forks at the top!
I'm so blessed and lucky to have had the opportunities and great experiences. We tried to make this a memorable year before I go off to college and what a great year! Check out my whitetail on the deer hunting forum!
