Pit blind question

Where does the dog go?  I’m talking about those tube type blinds that barely fit a full grown man.

You can get a small dog house looking blind for your dog that you put next to you.

Are you talking about a layout blind? A lot of guys don't use a dog when hunting this way, mine will fit inside my blind but I'm always concern he'll get in the way when shooting. If he was a little smaller he could fit behind me and it would be safer. There are also dog blinds you can buy or make.

No, not a layout.  A tubular pit, or any small pit for that matter that seats one person below ground level.  There’s no room for a dog in the blind.

You could dig a shallow one for the dog? I have a Final Aproach Mutt Hut.. Blends in real well.. Haven't used it on a field hunt yet... looks more like a dome tent to me...  Bought it from wally world online for $90 deliverd to the local store...

I use the Avery dog blind and dig it in a bit. it works well for my 80# lab.

A lot of those guys don't use a dog.  The ones that do have a seperate pit for the dog or a mut hut typically or will have a well trained dog that stays at a ditch, fence or brush row.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I think I’ll just leave the dog at home on these hunts.  He’s only 15 months old and isn’t settled enough yet for this situation.  Maybe by next season.

I tried to shoot out of my FA blind one time with my lab.  Everytime the doors flipped open he stood up.  Needless saying it was very tough to shoot.  The pit blinds we have built in the past were all 10-16' and we had a side that was elevated just for the dog to sit with us in the blind.  The smaller circular ones are kind of a one man show.

I've only been in a few pits and see a few more, but the last one I hunted out of was plenty big for a dog to be in it, and they had like a stairs setup for her to climb out.

The dogs we hunted with, mother/son. They rotated shifts (morning/afternoon).

 The first time i hunted on a refuge with those type of pits. They were ajustable seats so i just raised it up a little and had my dog sit on the seat. It got a little harder for him as the seat got wet he kept slippig off, So at home i was training another puppy and had made what they call a place board (for steadyness training) a 20' x 20' square piece of plywood screwed to 2x4's and now i just take that with me if i think i may be hunting one of those blinds, and set it on top of the stool seat in the blind.
