Luke is my 13 year old son that has hunted with me sense he could walk all day with out compaining. About 7 years old I think.. He has a big brother 4 years older that has been my hunting pardner for the the last 5 years. Sean has done well with a doe, spike, forky, and one pig and I mean PIG...This was Luke's first year to get a tag and carry a rifle. He pasted his hunter safety with flying colors and even helped the teacher with the handling of the guns. Teacher is a friend who knows Luke and his back ground around guns.
We hunted hard during the regular season with my goal to get Luke his first buck. But the only buck we saw was out of his sight. I let Sean have first crack at him but he had a hard shot, Head shot at 80 plus yards free hand and he missed. The buck turned to run and I dropped him before he could get away.
So late season comes and the first 2 days cold and rainy. We spend a lot of time in the timber and push a lot of deer but no shots for Luke. He did jump a nice buck at about 20 yards but was gone before he could even say the word BUCK...
But on the 3rd day Luke was in the right spot at the right time... The way it goes if you ever hunted you know what I mean..Me and the boys were spread out about 50 yard apart Sean on my right Luke on my left. We headed into a small group of trees with nothing but open clear cut on the other side and straight up. If there was a buck in there he would have no place to go but up the hill 300 yards with my boys all over him.. So you would think...Sean wasn't 50 yards in when his rifle cracked the early morning silence First thing I do is yell to Luke to get across the trees to get the deer on the way up the hill.. Thought I knew how to hunt.

The buck side hilled over to me and was on his way back down to heavy cover. He ran straight to me not knowing I was even there. So here I am with a 17 year old a 13 year old both pumped with adrenalin high power rifle ready to shot a deer and this buck runs right up to me with in 10 yards. My tags filled so I say Damn and throw up my hands and yell at him before he runs me over on his way back down. Sean is trying his best to get back over to get a nother shot but buck is to fast. The buck after seeing my turned toward Luke but was headed to the deep timber fast..It was like slow motion for me.... I was yell NOOOOOO As the buck had one more small hill to cross before he was gone forever!!! But on the last jump before he Left my sight I heard a crack coming Luke's side and the Buck dropped like a box of rocks.... Luke came down the hill and looked me straight in the eye and said.. Is that a nice buck Dad or what.....

One proud Dad......
