2010 ELK recap
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:49:15 PM »
Okay, so if you read my Deer post, you will know that I missed a 30 and 35 yard shot a BT Buck this year with my .300 Win Mag. Yes, I know it sucks, but I had something to prove during elk season now.

Opening day, I arrived at camp a little late and my party headed out to another area. We planned on meeting up for lunch. I headed to my favorite spot where I had killed a 4 X 4 elk my first year hunting (in fact is was about 4 hours into my first Elk hunt). The area was a mad house and I felt it had to much pressure. That's what I get for being late though. So I headed to another little area and found a decent spot to get out and hike around. ALLOT of sign and I ended up hiking into someone else hunt. So when I noticed them, I slung (kinda) my rifle and headed out the way I came in as quiet as I could. I got back into my truck and was going to head to another spot. Rounding a corner, there it was off to my left.. ELK ASS! The Elk turned and broadsided himself. At this point I was still in my truck and had no reason to get out.. It was my first sighting of a True Spike and this was a 3 point min area. That Bull, I am sure, was just taunting me......

No luck on opening day. The next day we spotted a legal Bull but couldn't get a shot to it... So we left the area and came back the next morning. It was a US Army textbook ambush. I was mid-way into the clearcut, the BatMan was just off the trail and a third hunter was on the other side with a good view. 2 other buddies were pushing through the timber. I heard rustling and I hit my cow call. I have no idea if it worked, but after a min or 2, out popped a 4 X 4 Bull. I confirmed the rack, got a decent hunting rest, went through my shot sequence and fired. BANG! Smoke cleared, NO SIGHT OF ANYTHING! I hit the radio to tell everyone where I had shot. If the bull bolted forward, it was covered. Back into the timber it was covered. To the Left, it was covered and to the right, It would be heading to me. Then I saw the Bull's head lift up for just a second and then rest back down. I had dropped him at 65 yards. He was a DAMN big Bull (at least compared to my previous Elk). And so far.. he is much tastier!

I hope I attached these pics the correct way!
