New to waterfowl hunting and asking for help.
« on: November 28, 2010, 12:08:00 PM »
Hello all, as soon as my late muzzle elk season is over I want to get my 2 year old lab out for some duck hunting. I am new to waterfowl hunting and am looking forward to getting out this year. I am looking for some places to go around Marysville area. I dont need to know anyone's honey hole just somewhere to get out and get her on some birds. Thanks in advance for your help!

Head up to fir island or get on WDFW site and look up the areas.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

If you have a boat you could go out in the salt where the sloughs and Sno river dump into the bay, you have to be careful and watch the tides. Find a root ball and tie off on it throw out some dekes and hope.

Fir Island has very little good public walk in hunting left since the "salmon restoration" projects destroyed the Headquarters and Farmed Island units.  So 90% of the public areas up there are now tidal so be real careful!

The last planted walk in area is the Welts or West 90 unit up at Bow-Edison.  It's pretty crowded now.  You might want to go up late morning or early afternoon and just observe how the place operates, where the ponds are etc.  To get a pond in the morning you'll have to be there around 2 or 3 am.  Since it's a 15 shot limit area, you can watch for a group to leave then take their place might be the best move if you're just starting out.

Most duck hunters go east of the mountains or buy a boat if you want to hunt the bay fronts effectively.  There's a pretty steep learning curve, but duck hunting can be very fun!

Public land in Duvall and Carnation isn't terrible. Get out there early, you can find a spot along the river, bring a pair of brush clippers for stickers and a machete. You might want to go out and find your spot on Saturday afternoon, cut down to the river then hunt it Sunday morning. I used to do it that way in High School. Cut yourself a hole to get to the river. Keep it your secret and hunting can be pretty good. Don't make it a big obvious trail. Most ducks in that area are pretty call shy. Don't over do the calling. Toss a few decoys, try to find a spot which is slow water and fairly safe. Some places you fall in and you can't get back out, those are no good for anyone-
