I called bogans yesterday and the ice that had formed had melted away already. But be warned, the restaraunts closed and I don't know if they answer the phones year round. I got lucky and the guy was just there to pick up mail when I called. But as of yesterday it was ice free.

Partner and I dropped off the shoemaker saturday the 11th, road had been plowed. River was in good shape, very fishable. Total of 9 anglers we saw, no fish. We were using jig and bobber with cured shrimp and/or eggs. Snowing hard upper half of the road as we were coming out.

I wouldn't worry about the ice. It's pretty warm here right now...

It seems that I have horrible timing with this river for the most part. I went down this last weekend and when I got to the river friday it was a little muddy but still very fishable. Then I woke up saturday morning to a river full of floating ice. Kinda ruined my weekend. Needless to say, no fish for me. Still nice to get out and always better than working. Did see a bunch of deer along the Snake though. Mostly does but a few smaller bucks. 2 3x3 and a 2x2, but one of the 3's was very tall. He will make for a damn nice buck in the next year or two.

When the ronde blows, you need to buy a rez license and fish the clearwater. I heard numerous reports this weekend on the clearwater. All I can tell you is that you missed out. Always seems to work like that.

Depending on where you go, you can still catch fish when the river is icing up. It makes it tough, but I've only done in twice and caught 5 fish one of those days. They don't fight worth a darn and the bite is very subtle, but they are still there. Here's a hint: think like a frozen fish whose activity level is directly related to the water temperature....

I went down to wawawai last thursday and had a decent day. Caught 1 nice 14 lb. male wild and had another fish break off. There was 6 guys fishing down the bank from me and between all of them they must of landed 10 or so fish.

no such thing as the ronde blowing out from febuary thru end of the season, some of my best days on that river in the mud and flowing at 7,000 cfs or more. That river would have to be jammed up to not be able to fish the holes where the fish are holding this time of year, caught plenty of fish with chunks floating down

To add to ^^^
The first time I ever fished the Rhonde, it was mid February and the river was "blown". Water was super high and chocolate milk. My brother and I had never fished for steelhead in a small river, basically we were clueless. Well, in the day and a half we were there we hooked 6 or 8 fish. Water clarity and or flow does not stop those fish from biting. There are so many in that river that if you spend enough time on it, you will find them.

You can take fish in all condition. You just need to adapt to the river. I personally didn't like fishing it when it was high. 6-8 fish is a slow day on the ronde with good condition.

The ronde is a very fun river to fish. That said, I really didn't enjoy fishing it when it was half frozen. Not so much because it is cold out, but more due to the fishing itself, and the fish, not being as fun. The same thing applies, for me, when it is really high. Going to the area right around the hatchery really isn't my thing. Part of the fun of the ronde is how remote it is and the scenery, and you don't get that fishing the hatchery area.

Alot depends on the year and how many fish return, last season was epic! And it looks like this year will be another for the books with runs 200% of the norm. Next year will be a big dissapointment for people who just started fishing this river, low snow pack and no water to push the smolts out will equal a bad year.

It sounds like feb. is the best time to try this river, but I am thinking about heading over next week.....will I be wasting my time? I have never fished it so it will be a scouting trip as much as a fishing trip. thanks

Feb is a hit or miss month, can be frigid and slow fishing or great. The latter part of Feb till early April is prime.. mid March being the best
