Late muzzle success!
« on: December 04, 2010, 07:45:53 PM »
Finally got one.
It took four days of hard, hard hunting in the foggy skies and frozen snow, but I connected with this really decent 3 point.  Not bad for a blackie.  I was hunting along the crest of some canyon breaks and jumped a little forkie.  Its a three point min. unit, so I kept hunting.  I came around the bend in the hillside and suddenly, this buck was standing above me looking down.  Game on!  I fired and he paunched up and took off downhill and around the bend.

I was hot on his trail, and the blood trail was so big a blind man couldn't miss it.  I then saw him crumpled up beneath an oak tree.  Nice!  So I tromp up close to him, and when I got within fifteen yards, he lifted his head up and jumped to his feet and took off!  One more shot put him down for good.

Final tally was about twenty five deer and four bucks.  I shot at a bigger buck two days before but I overshot and got only hair.  I tracked him for a quarter mile with no blood, so I'm sure he's fine in the woods somewhere.

Let me tell you, buddy.  Nothing will make you madder in your life than a wiley blacktail buck.  But when you finally get one, it's pretty damn satisfying.

Nice look buck.  I'm also wondering where you were hunting. more so for I see there is still a lot of snow on the ground there and most of the snow had melted off where i'm hunting.  Also I have a late season tag for Sella and wondering if there is snow on the ground down there.

Hmm...give up my secret spot...???

Haha.  Just kidding.  It was the West Klick.  I drew a special permit for the late hunt.  The higher elevations still had snow, but it was very old stuff and mostly frozen all the way through.  Tough hunting.

Thanks for the info Stevo!  I would never ask for you to give up your spot, but I was wondering about the weather once I saw all of the snow.  I could sure use the help of more snow to bag a critter.  I spent the whole day in an any deer/any elk unit and did not see a single thing to shoot at.  Yesterday I was in an any buck unit and only saw does.  I'm really getting flustered this year.  I dont think I've ever held onto a deer tag this late into the season.  :bash:

Loud and crunchy as hell is EXACTLY right.  Terrible hunting conditions.

I just got very lucky.
