Dudes that shoot the CVA Elkhorn
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:24:38 PM »
What kind of powder and bullets are you using?

I picked an Elkhorn up this morning and don't know where to start. I've played with a .54 CVA,but that was back before the sabots and the new powders were on the scene.

Hunting deer with it next year, and depending on how that goes I may try elk after that.

I did well with 777 loose powder and either the Barnes TMZ's, 250 grain sabots I think??, or the 295 grain tipped copper powerbelts with great results. 90-100 grains of powder. This was in a CVA Bolthunter Pro. This discussion has been on here before and I think the combination I used for mine was about the same, if I remember correctly, as the guys using the Elkhorn.

I used 100 grs. of pyrodex and the Barnes 295 gr TMZs bullets with the musket caps.  It would bust a clay pigeon everytime at 100 yards!

My go to muzzle loader is my elkhorn. I shot the 340g dead centers with 125 grains of pyro rs for year and still would shoot them, them are a fantastic bullet and me and my family have killed a lot of critters with them. The loads i am using now is 290 barnes tmz 110 grains of triple 7 fffg. I have shot 2 buck with this load and they have done very well.

I have taken a couple large deer with my cva elkhorn using 90 gr. 2f 777 and either a 240 gr hornady XTP, or a 300 gr. XTP. I have found that the harvester crush rib sabots are easier loading and most accurate as well  ;)  These loads penetrate well and drop them in their tracks. For your gun, try different bullets and loads until you find it's sweet spot. :twocents:

I shot my bull this year with 100 grains of 777 pellets and 300 grain Hornady SST's and dropped him in his tracks at 167 yards.
