Trophy 2359
« on: December 13, 2010, 03:47:51 PM »
Any one have any experience with the trophy 2359? It has the full alaskan bulkhead.

I want to upgrade the alumaweld to a larger boat for the ocean and don't want to break the bank doing it.

It has little to no electronics, no kicker, I don't think it has seen salt water, has all the standard features (heater, ice box, wash down, stove, shore power, ect..) the pics make it look like an overall well taken care of boat.

Asking is in the mid 25's

Your opinion's are needed

What year is it?  That'd be a good price if it's newer with low hours, but no electronics, if it's older or has lots of hours, would seem high priced.  I don't know where you are located at, but Stevens Marine in Tigard, OR has a couple nice boats my dad was just looking at in that price range, one was a trophy, one was another brand, I believe they were both loaded with electronics and pretty new.  I remember him saying they were great deals.  He's not in the market, just went there to purchase an outboard, and always looks, he used to be a boat broker.  Neither were the alaskan bulkhead though...

It's a 2000 model year
Does have the 220 hp inboard. The dealer claims no hour meter, but I'm sure it has one. And it was a repo.

Have not ruled out the idea of keeping the jet for winter fishing, good point on that. I'm sure the wife will have something to say about it.

Woodman, tell me anything you like...Are you happy with it? How does it handle big water? Fuel economy, performance. Pros/Cons. My intent is to run it out of Westport.

I like mine a lot, I keep it moored at Sekiu 6 months out of the year. It handles the water just fine, and I like being able to get in out of the weather. I also like the fact that you can keep the cabin warm. If you have the model with a v6 you will feel under power a little with more that 2 or 3 adult men on it. Don't get me wrong, I fished my v6 for years. Last year I had a 350 v8 installed and it does a whole lot better. I really never worry about gas mileage but It can use it up if you use your boat hard. If I remember correct it has an 86 gallon fuel tank. It is a heavy boat that handles the water pretty good for the fishing that I do and my wife and guests always feel safe on it. I like the fish holding tanks in the back deck also. I takes a good rig to pull it on the road, if I remember right the boat and trailer are around 6600 pounds. I do have a kicker on mine and have a shrimp winch and pots for it also. I think that the Trophy boat has had a lot of thought put into the design. I, by no means am a boat expert but I do like this boat and I have had it for 12 years. I painted the bottom with anti fouling paint since it sits in the salt water for 6 months at a time. I have many people that fish on it each year, some coming from other states over and over on it. It has been a serious fish killer for me and my friends for a long time. Last summer even Rasbo turned into quite the salmon killer on it. If I can answer any specific questions I would be happy to.

So, I'm gona go look at this thing tomorrow. But talking with the dealer their insurance does not allow them to take the boat out. They claim I can pay the marina there in the area a mechanic fee for an hour or so, and they will take it out with me on it. My thought is, if we can agree on a fair price then it's worth risking a hundred bucks or so to take it out, and it does sound like the marina mechanic has already done an inspection on it since it was a repo. Hope I don't make the four hour drive for nothing... But that's the risk of buying something used.

I would tell them that any cost incurred because of a test drive should come off of the sale price. I don't see them letting a sale slip by over that and I really don't buy that insurance won't let me do this crap. I would tell them that you won't buy anything without testing it out. I own a business and I would chew my sales guys out if they let a sale go over such a small amount against the sale price.

Just my opinion.

Well just got in and to say the least I am little disappointed, not in the boat but the sales staff. First impression the boat was in really good condition. Looked at the maintenance work they had done and called and talked to the mechanic that did the work, he felt the boat may need a gimble bearing and a new exhaust manifold and and new batteries, but over all he said the power train seemed tight. The sales team was a father and son team. I had been dealing with the son and on the phone I asked if they had room to work on the price, he said yes. We looked up the NADA value and it was quite a bit lower than the asking price. The father happens to show up at that time, so we start talking about the NADA value, he keeps trying to tell me that I have to add in the bulk head, hard top and items like that. Now I can agree you have to add in some items, and NADA can at times be a little low, but I think he was getting carried away, some things the boat did not have. Our conversation was plesant untill he said "well bottom line is I have to have full asking price". So I never got to a point where I was able to make an offer. So at that point I politley afforded them both a thank's for wasting their time, shook their hands and walked out the door. I may have actually paid full price if they would have at least entertained a little negotating. when I left home this morning I told myself no big deal if I don't come home with a boat, so, no big deal.
All in all I do like the trophy and will keep them in mind as I continue to look.
