Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS
« on: December 22, 2010, 07:43:24 AM »
Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this lens.  The wife is really getting into wildlife photography and this is her xmas present.  Hoping I made the right choice on a higher end lens than she had that can reach out there a bit further.  It will be on a Canon Rebel so I know the lens will likely outperform the camera and be a bit big on it but a new camera body will be the next upgrade.

Been lots of discussion on this lens.   I've seen some damn good pics taken with one.   Timber used to shoot with it.   I think its a good lens for the money.

I've used it a lot, and find myself keeping it at 400 99% of the time.  I don't care for the "push-pull" zoom, and have read that the action can allow dust to enter the lens.  It's a great lens though, as are all the white "L" lenses.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

I think Pope was adverse against it.  I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I think he thought it was a bit inconsistent or soft.   I think Rob or huntnphool argued with him on it.  All I've ever seen was Timbers pics and I thought he took awesome captures with it.  I think its a great lens for the money.   Without popping for a prime and having to auction the kids on ebay, I think its a good lens.

I really like the 70-200 2.8     Its a bit short for wildlife though.

Thanks for the replies.  She has taken some pretty nice shots with the 55-250 but I am hoping this will get out there a bit further.  There sure is a lot to learn about photography but she really likes it.
