WA high buck..."28in. Blacktail"
«

Thought I'd finally post a few pics of my buck I took this past September during WA's high buck hunt. Took my nephew in on a marathon backpack trip into the Alpine Lakes wilderness and spotted this buck late on the 15th. First thing the next morning hiked to where we spotted him the prior night and on the way around the canyon we passed on a nice 4X4 which hurt, but we gambled that the buck we wanted would still be around. Sure enough, I saw the buck still in the same spot high on the canyon wall!
We missed our first two shots as he made us, but I connected as he cut below us heading for the bottom. Got down to him and saw he didn't have the typical Mule deer tail. Was this a blacktail? What was he doing way up here? Anyways, it has the exact tail of your typical blacktail but he may be a hybrid...I don't know. One side of his antlers has the normal 4X frame plus eyeguard and the other side has points coming from the mainbeam. 28" wide and very heavy horned. Weird, but I'll take it. We dropped our packs and gear and took some pics before boning it out and just about killed ourselves packing it out.
By the way, we did have our orange vests on prior to the pics, but we were getting ready to strip off the raingear to set to work.

Very nice buck. Could easily be a cross up there. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness crosses into what the WDFW considers blacktail country. No matter if it's a mulie, a blacktail, or a cross, that's a hell of a nice buck. Congrats.

Very nice buck!! Congrats Looks like it could be a Benchleg but thats a touchy word at times.
Still a nice buck and looks like he weighed a fair amount. Love the mass!! Looks more like a blacktail since you were on the west side of the cascades.
