New Bear and Lion Dog

Just drove over to Missoula, MT and picked this dog up.  He's a 3 year old Leopard Cur and has been on several bears and a couple of lions.  Very fast and gritty.

I use to have hounds.I had alot of different breeds, but never a cur .How are they for speed and endurance.

Met two crazy guys in Plentywood pheasant hunting that had 4 upland dogs, but the fifth was a cur that resembled a lion (color, looked like he had a mane). Anyway the point is the trainer (owner) said of all the bird dogs he's had over the years the cur did as good as any flusher he'd ever owned and as far as stamina it was head and shoulders above the rest.

The dog was nice, but with all his scars from lion, bear, coon, possum etc. he looked scary.

Heck Fred, start working this one with the Griff and you might have a tag team.

Nope I now have two and an older "gentleman"   (if you knew him you'd know why I am chuckling) I hunt with has three Leopard curs.

Michelle, they're not hounds!  They are curs!!

Griffs are already predisposed to be catty, I don't really want to encourage that!!

That is a GREAT looking dog Fred. Cool. Do you know anything about how they do with family? I would sure love to have a dog I could use on cats and just have around the house too... and maybe isn't predisposed to barking his brains out like most hounds....

My buddy has a couple Mountain Curs and they are great little dogs....and...they are house dogs. Incredibly gritty with LOTs of heart!

Leopards are real sweethearts in the house and handle very well and that is the thing that has drawn me to them.  I believe they do things nearly as well if not as well as most hounds.  Obviously there are some really top notch hounds out there, but there are superstars in the Leopard Cur breed as well.  But these guys handle alot better and are much better behaved around the house....but most hounds if handled properly can be taught to handle as well as other breeds of dogs.  I know you have run hounds in the past so you know what I'm talking about, you get out of a hound what you put into it, handling and manners are no different, these just seem to be a little easier to get to handle and behave.

How do you like them leopard curs?

I really like them, but they are alot like a mule is in the horse world.  If your a horse person you probably won't like mules, don't like the quirks and can't handle or don't want to handle the constant ribbing from all the horse people that know for sure their horse is way better than a mule ever could be.  Curs are alot like that in the hound world.  Most hound guys do not like curs, but honestly alot never give the dogs a chance. They develop a little slower then some good hounds, but they are super fast and very smart dogs.  The guy I got this dog from loves that this dog is always out in front on a bear race but believes they cannot handle the day in and day out hard races.  I have an older friend in Northern CA that trees on average 35 to 50 bears a year that will beg to differ with him.  They suit me and my style of hunting...so I like them alot.
