Silencers.

I was just watching a TV show(Chuck) and the use of silencers was very common.  Always the same sound when the gun was fired.  A question to any that have experience with the noise suppressors, do they work like in the shows or is it just hollywood?  I remember someone saying the .22 short was the only cartridge silenced by those screw on attachments.

I have shot a few guns in New Zealand "were they are legal" With silencers on them. I was running a rem 700 223, and i did not even have ear plugs in. It was very quiet, i could not believe how mush noise it took out. I have also shot a few 22's that all you can hear is the slide cycle. Its pretty sweet

I'd you get a good one they are quite and easy to mantain. The only way to really cut the noise is sub sonic ammo. The crack of the bullet makes a lot of noise. The 270 win I shot was whiter then the 17hmr both had the same make of silencer.

Suppressors work on all calibers, but the smaller the caliber, the easier it is to suppress the sound. 22's being the most common. The sound you hear on TV is just a canned noise, as real suppressors will sound differently depending on the caliber, ammo, can maker, medium (if any), etc....  The noise made from a single clip of ammo through the same suppressor can change pretty easily depending on whether the medium inside the can is wet or dry. Wet medium usually drys quickly, so the 1st shot through will sound more quite than those after it

  I saw one shot once, guy would not let anyone touch it. it was  a Ruger 10-22, with a special built 6 inch barrel, subsonic 22 ammo and with the supressor on it looked like a fat barrel target model ruger.
all you could hear was the slide cycling, even the slide had alittle stop on it so the guy cycled it manually. What I love on TV is the revolvers with silencers!! LOL

There is at least one make of revolver that utilizes a silencer very effectively.

The biggest factor from my perspective is matching the ammor to the silencer/barrel.  A .22 LR only needs between 14-16 inches of barrel to fully burn its powder, so a .22 LR rifle with a long enough barrel can use a small silencer to get the sound pressure level to nearly zero at the muzzle.  The only sound of concern then would be the sonic boom of the bullet.  If you can match the components and keep the ammo subsonic, you may only hear a slide cycle or hear the gun sound like it dry fired.  One of the best designs I've seen is a bolt action Enfield chambered in .45ACP.  The silencer is integrated into the barrel, such that the barrel is ported almost the entire length and has baffle chamber between each set of ports.  The only sound is the firing pin....and the bullet impact.

For those interested this bill is actually in the house right now to lift restrictions on Suppressors! Since in this state you can own one but not shoot one?!?!?!  It has support from the majority of law enforcment agancies in the state...

I have shot a lot of suppressed weapons in Oregon where they are legal.  You can purchase one in this state, but technically you can't fire it here I believe.  It will also cost you a $200 tax stamp for it.  My buddy has the Ruger lever action 10/22 style rifle suppressed in the .22 caliber.  He uses standard velocity ammo.  As long as you keep the ammo speed bellow the sound barrier you can suppress it very well.  Once it breaks the sound barrier you get the crack.  They are nice as they don't kill your ears.  You can shoot them out over time as well.  Another great one is a threaded HK USP in the .45  Pretty quite to shoot.  They should legalize it in the state on the bases that it would not alarm people if you were to fire your gun and saves the hearing.
