Does anyone here have a kid that shoots the .250 Savage? If so, do you hand load or purchase factory ammunition??

The first deer I ever killed was with a 250 Savage.  Small WT buck in hills North of San Antonio.  Factory ammo, I believe it was 90 gr. WW “silver tip”.  That deer just stood there and stared after I shot it, for what seemed like an eternity but was probably only a few seconds.  Then it dropped without taking a step.  Weird, must have been the shock of the 3000 ft/sec bullet.  That would have been 1972 ish.

I doubt if this helps much, it was a borrowed rifled, I never used one again.

i have a savage 99 in 250sav. i shoot factory loads. either winchester or remington...think they are 87 gr. they are somewhat hard to come by though. re-loading is probably a better way to go.

I shoot a 250-3000 in an older Sav 99TD model.  It has a 1-14 twist and will marginally stabalize factory 100gr loads but dotes on 87gr and 75gr bullets and I use it mostly for coyotes.  I did build a rifle that duplicates 250 balistics with the 100gr NPT's and it has proved to be a very effective on large northern whitetails.  My ex-father-in-laws and a couple of fellows in his hunting camp used 250's and were more than satisfied with them and kept their families in venison for many years.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I shot a Ruger 250 for years, loved it, kills alot better than ballistics suggest. I always hanloaded 85 grain Nosler BT's, and 100 grain Core Lokts. My current is a old 99 that my grandmother gave me before passing. Need to get er tuned up and go kill a buck with it for her. I'm thinking I used Win 760?? I think all you can get anymore are Winchester 100 Silver Tips, the old ones, not the Ballistic ST"s.

The reason I asked is because I have a set of Hornady FL dies and 50 pieces of WW brass (29 unfired) that I honestly have no use for.

They're listed in the Classifieds section.

No $$ involved. Strictly a "Pay it Forward" and hope it'll go to/for a kid that can put them to good use.  :hello:

I used one my great uncle built up. They were hand loads. Can't really speak for the performance of the load cause my scope got screwed up and I wound up breaking the deers back. It broke it's back quick though. It's really a nice little gun. I don't remember the weight of the bullet either. Good beginner gun or at least practice gun.

Hunting is and always will be a family tradition.
If you load it they will come.
