7 RUM
« on: April 28, 2008, 12:00:30 PM »
Howdy..Im thinking of replacing my 20 yr. old 7 mag barrel with a custom bartlein or broughton barrel in 7mm RUM.  Ive looked up some ballistic data on the RUM and it appears to be fairly impressive....perhaps 200-300+ fps better (all things being equal) to the 7mm mag.

Anyone own this caliber on this board?  If so, do you have any handload data available.  Looks like a kickazz round.  Thanks in advance.

Not from changing the barrel, but going from 7mm RM to 7mm RUM while changing out the barrel.

Have heard good things about the RUMs, but no personal experience with them.

I should say new barrel and of course re-chambering to 7mm RUM. 7 Rem ultra magnum cases are quite large as compared to 7 mag. 90 grains avg. compared to 60 grains+/-.

Someone has to own one here?

I had one it went to the pawn shop.... :dunno:  It was a rem 700 BDL  it was an average shooter at best

I just ordered a 7 STW supposed to be more consistent and its only 100 fps drop from the 7 RUM

Were you just shooting factory loads or did you handload for it?

Hand loads and the one factory offering (1 Box)  I tried sciroccos and Barnes bullets.

You might have better luck with a custom barrel that I had. I guess its hell on barrels too.

Yah Ive read that as well about barrel life.  A good custom barrel may solve some of the issues and keeping loads off the max as well.

Need a sitka whacker. Might throw on a Bell/carlson Mountain stock too.

JWS over on BTC has a 700, RMEF edition camo,SS 7 RUM. We've been talking about working up a load for it. He's got it at the smiths getting a trigger job done. I think he's going with 168 Bergers with turrets. I'll let you know when he gets it back, give you an excuse to get down here for a day.
