Whats the difference between the encore and the contender rifles and can you switch both of them into a pistol? Thanks
You gonna draw those pistols or whistle Dixie?

The Contenders are a bit smaller and do not accomodate some of the larger calibers that the Encore actions can.  The Encore actions are noticeably bigger then the Contender actions.

I have a few rifle barrels for my Encore Pro Hunter and recently purchased and scoped a 7mm-08 barrel on a seperate action as well.  I enjoy the single shot rifles but they are not for everyone as some people think they are kinda goofy.  You can interchange rifle and pistol barrels as long as they stay in the same family ie. Contenders with Contender barrels and Encore/Encore Pro Hunter with Encore marked barrels.

There are some legal issues with switching rifle and pistol formats with these guns.  It has been discussed on previous Encore threads.

The encore has a lot more caliber choices. I shoot a contender handgun and like it a lot. But if I was going out to buy a new one. Buy the encore, there is a lot of great calibers. But if you can find a good cheap contender, and just want a couple basic calibers. Its the gun to get. There is not to much diffrence between the two.

Encore all the way.
Now if someone had a turkey barrel they wanted to unload I'd be in business all the way.

If it is a factory rifle it is apparently unlawful to make it a pistol. Pistol from the factory you can turn them into rifles without issue.

The biggest difference in the 2 is weight. The contender has a substantially lighter frame that limits the recoil the frame can handle. The encore is much heavier and can accommodate just about any caliber. Like carp said if you find a contender frame for the right price really hard to go wrong. Go get a 30-30 barrel or 45-70 for it and go deer hunting. Once you hunt deer with a pistol hard to go back to a rifle. And killing yotes with the .223 barrel is a kick in the butt. Good luck. If your looking to shoot it as a rifle though make sure to go with the Encore.  :twocents:

Agreed...my Dad has hunted whitetails back east as long as I can remember with a Contender super 14 in 7mmTCU with great success. He won't even look at a long gun for hunting anymore.

Here is mine, I got a killer deal on it. It is a 16 super comp 223. The barrel alone is like 300-330.00. I got this gun with everything but the red dot sight for 250.00 :yike: I almost felt bad :chuckle: Now I have a 1.5-4 burris on it and it drives tacks!

The pro hunter is a little different than a regular Encore too. I think they have a better trigger and they have the swing hammer. Also a better, more comfortable stock with more recoil absorbing ability....I think they call it the Flex-Tech stock.
