Idaho plans Wolf Trapping Season in addition to Hunting Season

PREDATORS — Plans for a wolf trapping season are being drafted in addition to the wolf hunting season scheduled to open this fall in the Idaho Panhandle.


“Two years ago, hunters took 27 wolves legally in the Panhandle Region during the hunting Sept. 1-March 31 hunting season,” said Jim Hayden, Idaho Fish and Game Department Panhandle Region wildlife manager. “We need to take significantly more than that this fall.”

Hunters cannot kill enough of the elusive wolves to bring the wolf population down to management goals, Hayden said.

A lawsuit canceled last year’s scheduled wolf season, allowing wolf packs to growl larger and have an even greater impact on elk herds, he said.

 “We’re only in the initial stages of putting together proposals,” Hayden said Friday.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to set fall hunting and trapping seasons for wolves at its  July 27-29 meeting in Salmon

Pete Sheperd gave a really good talk about wolves at our Rendezvous. I think it was year before last. For those that don't know him Pete is retired from ADF&G. Pete was involved with and in charge of wolf control for a big part of his career.
Pete was very clear that an open hunting season and even an open trapping season for wolves would be unlikely to reduce or even stop the increase in wolves in ID and MT. He said wolves get smart fast and the first year they had the hunting season there was an anomally. The wolves will be much harder to take after a couple open season years. If you remember they didn't reach their goal for harvest even at that.
I'm thinking regardless what the wolf lovers say in order to control wolf numbers it will require hunting and trapping wide open year around supplemented with some aerial control from Wildlife Services.

Good to see Idaho wildlife agency knows how to actually manage wildlife.

Isn't it amazing that someone else introduced the wolves that we didn't want and we have to pay to get rid of them.  I'd say if the animal rights people want the wolves let them pay for all the research and court costs that it takes when one is killed.  I just don't understand why we as hunters have to pay for that.  Just saying.
