Turkey Down!
« on: May 12, 2008, 05:28:14 AM »
My 15 yr old bagged his first turkey on Saturday in the Teanaway. The bird weighed 20 lbs and had a 9 in beard with 1 in spurs. We heard a few gobbles in the morning but couldn't close the deal, the toms wouldn't budge. We moved to a different spot and got a tom to gooble in the distance about 10:30 but we beleive he had some hens with him because as we closed the gap we could hear him gobbling away from us, I believe the hens were pulling him away. We went back to camp and I let my son practice shooting his bow. At about 3:30-4:00 we were talking about heading home to be there for Mothers day to score some points with the wife, I grabbed the slate call and layed out a couple yelps and purrs. All of sudden about a 1/4 mi away this tom fires off a hot gobble, he was really worked up and was closing the deal pretty fast, my son had taken off his camo because he got hot so he ran back to the truck as fast as he could and put it back on while I set up about 80 yrds away. Got the dekes set up and he was gobbling like crazy as my son got back to the blind. He hung up for a few minutes about 200 yrds away so I quit calling to make him think I was moving away. I made some very soft yelps and purrs, it worked like a charm, he came in to within 15 yrds and my son pulled the trigger...BLAM! Bird down! He was so close that the 3 in mag wadding hit him in the throat and had meat on it. My son was so excited, it was great to see him so excited, that is what hunting is all about  :chuckle:
