Idaho DIY hunt
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:30:44 PM »
I posted a few weeks ago in the deer section that a few buddies and I are trying to plan a hunting trip this fall for deer and/or elk. If we go for just deer then I think we will go back to where we used to hunt when I was a kid, as long as it is still all public land... I have been looking through the regs and seeing if I could find any decent areas that would allow a chance for both deer and elk at the same time. We are looking at a week to ten day trip. We are all in our late 20's and in good shape so we are up for any and all ideas anybody can throw at us.  :hunter:

This will be my second year hunting ID for deer and elk.  After last year I will be focusing all my time in the panhandle units probably mostly Unit 4.  A lot of steep timber land with logging jobs and if you actually get off the roads and hike you probably will not see anyone else.  At least that was my experience last year.  I did not bag anything but I did get into them a couple times which was a succes for me since it was my first time out.  How many of you are going to be hunting?

There will be between 3 and 6 of us I am thinking. We are getting together Saturday night to sit down and discuss our options and come up with a game plan. We are considering both Idaho and Montana so we need to make our decision soon so that we can apply for Montana by the 15th of March if we decide to go there. Were you seeing both deer and elk?

Also, were you bow hunting or rifle? I would like to go bow but most of the guys aren't bow hunting so it will have to be rifle for me. Do you have to apply for elk tag A or B or is that OTC as well. Tough to tell reading the regs. :dunno:

It is OTC, but you have to choose an A or B tag.  one has more time allocated toward archery and the other toward rifle.  Pick where you want to spend your time when it comes to elk.

Thanks man. I swear, half the fun is just doing all the research and trying to find a good place to go. I always seem to be the "planner" of the group so I am used to it.  :)

Your best bet is going to be units 4 & 6 both have great opportunities for deer and elk.  I currently live in Spokane and have spent a fair amount of time hunting in both units so please feel free to PM me with more specific questions, if you have any.

Good Luck!!

I was hunting modern firearm and I was mostly hunting for Elk but saw both.  It is nice with how ID elk is earlier than WA.  You usually get the tail end of the rut which I believe the season last year started Oct 10.  I know of a couple guys that called in bulls during the modern season (Tag B).  Tag A is for archery and it is earlier in the year of course and both tags are OTC.  Also ID has 2 or 3 days during the season (tag B) that you can take a cow with your bull tag.
