Coyote question

At my first stand today we busted a coyote at 70 yards while setting up, shot and missed, then took some running shots. What is the general rule of thumb for returning to the same spot with hopes of that yote being there? How long should i wait?

He is now what we call in my neck of the woods, a well educated dog.  Good luck.  If you didn't do any calling in that location after the volley of bullets, you might get lucky after a few days.

I agree with VV to a extent , I could tell you some stories about recalling coyotes you would have a hard time believing . All coyotes are diffrent just like we are . some aint so right bright while others are very quick to learn .

I would try to set up on your next trip maybe a 1/4 mile from where you were busted last time. If you were using a call on the last trip just mix it up a little and try a different sound. It's possible that same dog could still be in the general area and will eagerly come in. You may also need to sit tight for a little longer as this dog is probably going to be a little more cautious the next time. Play the wind and keep movement to a minimum. I had the same thing happen to me last week, missed a standing broadside shot at 130 yards, I'm not worried about that dog so much as I was not calling at the time, they tend to come in out of curiosity as often as they do when they are hungry.

well went out there and saw three dogs, the hunting partner missed a 140 yard shot

I dont really believe all th hoopla about gun smart dogs.  i have shot untold numbers of dogs from the same stands for years.  i have also missed quite a few of those.  come back next time and sometimes they are there and sometimes not.  they are dogs thats it.  are they smart? hell yes they are.  just do what you feel at the time.  dont buy into the lore too fast....

yes they remember but its a matter of coming to a call and getting shot at that makes them realy sneaky. I have a coyote I keep missing and he is one smart dog and seems to send in others to see whats up first which is why Ive missed getting a shot at it. Ive seen some very dumb ones too in the same area as this smart one. I had one follow me and come with in 100yds of me walk so I had to let the air out of him at 100yds
