I picked this scope jig up from KillBilly today, Thank you KillBilly!

I cant wait to make a mess on the washer with it lol!  :IBCOOL:

Have to run up to McLendons hardware first though and check the #31 bits they have there with the pilot sleeve included in the kit though, seems as if the bit they sent with the kit is a little too big for the pilot sleeve hole. want to be careful, only want to drill each hole once rather than weld them shut and starting over after filling the holes because they are too large.

Cant wait to give this jig a go-round and get on with more progress. :IBCOOL:

Randy, you should call the company and ask them to make it right if they sent the wrong bit or pilot sleeve.

i will call them on Monday, i actually want shorter bits though so they have less tendancy to wander. the shorter screw bits always do a better job on precision holes a machinist told me at my last job. I just cant use carbide because they will drill super hard steel easier, that means i could break a tap off in there easier lol! :chuckle: that would ruin my day.

getting to the point that i am going to give up on hunting anymore and use my huntin money on finishing this rifle up.

cant get anyone to go out and hunt with me when i can get out, may as well just spend the money on something rather than buy license and tags for something and not use them.

I want to clarify that dontgetcrabs participated in this purchase and we both feel it is a worthy cause to help out a friend in need. This is not the first time for either of us and it probably won't be the last.

thanks dontgetcrabs!!!!!!!

i have to run the top of the reciever through a milling machine even though i have the Jig, its not perfectly flat and the front ring leans towards the rear, i dont want to bind the scope mount or have the scope rings leaning back towards the butt either.

Just has too much angle on it and i dont want goddy looking shims showing under the scope mount.

Not sure how much "lean" there is, but you could drill/tap and mount the bases then, "LAP" the rings for a non-binding scope mount.

Just a thought :twocents:  May be cheaper than what you were thinking.

Hey--------Glad to see you back at the project.    Beats American Idol any day :chuckle:

I was thinking about that also, i have to still go and pick out the mount i want to use, dont know if i want two piece or one, but i am told a one piece will be better than dual bases.

got bored today (whats new), i decided i was done waiting to have someone else get free time to drill & tap this thing, so i did it here.
worked well! Except the tap sucked ass, atleast it waited to break while i was removing it from the last hole. have to stock up on some new ones.
Have to order online i think, proprietary thread 6/40 or 42. Hardware doesnt carry them.

I had to anneal the steel on each hole with my torch, heated a rod (nail) to almost melting, then placed it in the center punch mark until it cooled on each of the holes, did the job perfect!

heres my destruction for today. went with a two piece mounting system due to cost, 8mmman helped me with the front one, but i had to buy the rear one still even though i got one i could have worked withm but my file was missing in action today and weather was take a ride to the sporting goods store weather.

Scope will be changed out.
Have to change the bolt handle also too.

going to coat it soon with affordable stuff i have used before, header paint. all i can afford and i already have it, works well, chemical resistant after baking it at 350 to 400 for 30 minutes, then letting it cool completely then baking it again at 400 for an hour. i wont dare bake it any hotter than that.

I also have to turn the bolt down, i got a remington 700 bolt handle i will have put on there, i am cutting this one off at just above the curve, then have someone TIG weld the new one on it.

Wait a second, that is an outside workbench, not your washer and dryer  :chuckle:
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.
