Was the M1917 revolver issued in WWII to the Marines?

The M1917 has been resurrected by S&W as the 625. It is a revolver that shoots .45ACP with half or full moon clips or you can buy 45 auto rim brass.

Was the M1917 issued to the Marines only, or was it issued to both Army and Marines?

If it was issued to both was it Pacific Theater only or both theaters?

I've been looking but can't find enough data on the hand gun.

:) I do not think the 1917 and the 625 are even similar except for both shooting the 45acp/rimmed. I think a gun must be set up for the rimmed cartridge. BUT i will put on my research hat!!

No, no I am not saying anything like that. I realize that a lot of folks did not know there was a revolver that shot 45 ACP before the S&W625, that is why I put that hand gun in there. What I want to know is this: DID THE US MILITARY ISSUE THAT GUN(M1917) FOR WWII LIKE THEY DID FOR WWI? And if they did was it only Marines or both Army and Marines?

sisu I dont think the marines were issued them I think it was only the army and I think they were even seeing use in the korean war but I could be wrong. I have a book by skeeter skelton that talks of them but its on loan to my dad.

Yes, that makes sense that both would of been involved. I have been looking at archival videos and see this hand gun and was wondering IF it was the M1917. I spoke with a guy that claimed the military personal that were issued the M1917 liked it better than the 1911 because they could re-load faster with the half moon clips. But that claim is subjective to the individual.

I do know I had friends in Viet Nam with 357 Pythons and 22 High Standards and 22 Woodsman. Personally I'd of gone with a 22 revolver because of the mud, moisture and such, but alas I was rejected from enlisting do to a knee injury that summer in the mines.
