Sturgeon and Shad
« on: May 16, 2008, 07:54:49 PM »
Took the day off work to fish the Columbia. Caught 10-12 Shad in the first hour and then switched over to Sturgeon fishing. It was pretty slow going, but we managed 6-8 shakers and I got this 45" keeper. An awesome day to be on the water.  :IBCOOL:

Nice job Antlershed. looks and sounds like you had a great time.

This may be a dumb question but Do you eat the Shad and if so how do you prep them?

We do not eat the Shad. We kept some for Sturgeon bait, and I had a buddy who wanted some for crab bait. We were fishing out of Kalama, and shad for bait didn't work that well for us. The keeper was caught on a smelt in 65 feet of water. We caught a few shakers on squid as well.

I am pretty busy in the next month or two....trying to finish up grad school (writing a 10 page paper for each of the next 3 weekends), moving and getting the new place fixed up, and my buddy is getting married (kills two weekends with bachelor party and wedding). Towards the end of July my schedule should open up, and I would be more than willing to take ya out and show you a few things about catching dinosaurs.

A few years ago I got a 52" Sturgeon in Aberdeen. They are fun to catch.

They sure are. I've got a 58 and a 59 under my belt (my buddy says I'm just lucky  :chuckle:), and then all the rest of my keepers have been in the 42-48" range. I got a lot of meat off yesterday's keeper, but would love to get another 50+. I can't wait to eat some of it tonight.  :IBCOOL:

I had fun bring mine in. He did not want to come off the bottom. It was close to 30 minutes of fun  :yike: It was a battle to who was going to where out. Then a hour later a bear desided to walk to the shore when we were in the boat. It was a fun day.

Well done!!!  Heading down next weekend myself. The season will be over by July, you must be going to catch and release?

Okay Coho, maybe we can get together over a beer and give you some notes.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!
