Everything I've read, and everyone I talk to mentions calls that sound like a "raspy" old hen...

What is the attraction for the gobblers?  I'm assuming more rasp is better?  But why?

Thoughts appreciated...

more likely, it sounds more "mature", I dont think they care, but a mature hen "almost" always has a small flock of her offspring with her, when a younger hen might be alone ?  :dunno:

Its the cougar turkey call!  I love the scratchy raspy calls..sometimes older hens can have deeper yelps.  I have had toms love it and leave it however.  not sure why..only that maybe the big guys girlfriend is raspy and he know what she sounds like and he doesn't want his butt kicked again.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Oh hell, raspy, squealin", mellow...don't much matter, these are just tools of the marketing people to keep you buying calls! If you are in the right place any of them will work! In reality, if you are around a tom that is "hot" he'll come a running, if he's busy with some hens, he won't. Get a couple calls, learn to use them "appropriately" and they'll work. Or, hell, be like me a buy a bunch of calls...lot more fun. :)
