Turkey Hunting Help
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:43:27 PM »
I need a little help. I just moved to the west side and want to hunt turkey. Can anyone point me in a good area. I am really after Easter turkey as they seem to be closest to my location(Tacoma). I am going to scout......I am just looking for a little direction to start. Shoot me a PM. Thanks

They released a ton back in the day here in Grays Harbor.  Used to see them all the time along the upper Wynoochee River.  Most got nailed by Yotes and Eagles.  Haven't seen one over here in 8+ years.  If you don't mind driving a little ways there are a bunch of Meriams around White Salmon.

Easterns will flat out drive you nuts !!  :P
Just thought I would warn you, they call them "phantoms",
You would save gas, time, and effort if you go ahead and hunt the other species.  :twocents:
If you seriously are committed to hunting Easterns, plan on spending more time attempting to locate these birds than to actually "hunting" them,
look at the harvest reports on WDFW website, pick an area and start scouting now.
Find gated roads, and search for sign, get out of your vehicle well before daylight and cover ground.
Capital Forest has birds, Vail Tree Farm has birds, I have heard Mason County has some.......
They are on both sides of I-5 all the way south from Thurston county to Cowlitz, and maybe to Vancouver, but finding small flocks scattered over all that real estate is going to be your biggest challenge.
Almost nobody is going to give up their area, it is too hard to find one, then to share with someone they don't know.....

:yeah: Very well said. It is not that folks do not want to help it is just real tough to do. Bird locations change, the true hunters are always scouting, and WORKING at it. The information is closely protected to the point I have heard of folks following other hunters to learn locations and place to start. Pay attention on this site you will figure out who knows what. When you have a little understanding of the bird and the game PM some folks and see if they are not more willing to discuss (NOT GIVE OUT) information. :twocents:
