Gun Safes
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:37:35 PM »
I understand you get what you pay for and always buy bigger than you think you need.  Needing some recommendations for a fireproof case.  This might not happen soon but would like a heads up as to what to look for.  I understand costco has some good sales throughout the year.

I have a champion, great safe for a "mid + " price range. You are right get the biggest one you can get! They fill up quick and they never fit half the guns they say :chuckle: Well maybe if they all don't have scopes :chuckle: Some of the bigger farm stores have safes, and they have some good deals :IBCOOL: Mine was the last one and it had a scratch on the back of it. So I got a 1000.00 28 gun safe for 700.00 :IBCOOL: Good luck! lots to choose from.

Been looking on craigslist, not much lately.  Problem is, everytime I have the cash for a safe, I end up buying a new gun.  So digital or old school?

Seen some that have pistol pouches built into the door, great idea.

Yeah those sleeves are nice. I have not got any, but thought about it. I like digital locks! very easy, very fast, in fact I just had to change the battery for the first time in mine. I have had it for 6 years!

Agreed, digital is nice, but make sure there is the manual override (maybe they all do). I had the solenoid go out on mine so I had to replace it, but fortunately I have a manual key override so I was still able to get into it.

Do not forget to check WallyMart as well. I got my 24 gun Sentry for $200.00 cheaper at Walmart then Costco, $300.00 cheaper then Sportco cough "ripoff" cough.

The only time I was in Big R on the Newport highway they had several different models.  Didn't check any prices at that time so no help there.

I bought mine from "Charlie" at Mountain View Safe company.  Seems like a good safe, and not a lot of money for what you get.  Plus, he's a great guy to deal with.

i was going to buy another one.  the best one i could find for the price was from costco.  the one i have now was bought from a scratch and dent store.  the only "problem" with it is the paint is fisheyed on the back that sits against the wall.  who cares anyways.  paid 50% of the retail price and they threw in a free digital lock....

I have a liberty I with the Cabelas name on it, great safe digital lock and fire seal also. The fire seal I found is not on all safes so take some time and do your research before you buy.

Buy one that will do the job for what you have and expect to accomplish.  Buying a $400-$500 safe to protect thousands of dollars worth of guns and optics is not realistic.  If they are to small, they don't hold what you want them to.  If they are not built well (and this is where you get what you pay for), in terms of thickness, fire protection, weight and locking system, it also will not do the job.  Fire will destroy the contents and thieves can literally hack in or carry the whole safe away to open later.

With that being said....shop.....some good deals on safes if you research and look for models on the floor too long or people upgrading to larger units.

Bought  mine a few years back. After some research ended up at Welcher's for a Browning safe. They had a very good fire rating, best I could find, but like I said, that was a few years back. Also researched prices through a guy that could buy the same safe wholesale, and Welchers price was lower than what this guy could get it for, let alone his mark up to me.

It could all be different, now :dunno:
