I tried to get the actual bear hug picture and get the thing off the ground it just wasnt happening :bdid:  I cant imagine actually seeing a 400lb on the ground

I got a 380# field dressed (over 400 live) and he was a tank.

Congratulations on a great bear! You earned it. Good job with the story too. 256lbs is big for a spring bear.

Not many people have the opportunity to weigh the whole bear. I have never been able to do that. I have weighed the four legs though on a number of bears that I and friends have shot as well as taken girth measurements. I have come up with a formula that I think is in the ball park of comparing leg weight to live weight. When I weigh the legs they have obviously been skinned out and are minus the feet so the ankle joint has been cut through. I think that the 4 legs multiplied by 3.3 might be a close estimate for live weight. My biggest had legs weighing 120# and my first bear's legs weighed 104#. My brother's biggest bear's legs weighed 107#.

I do not suppose you have the ability to weigh just the 4 legs as described? If you can I would love to know what they weigh compared to the live weight. Thanks, Rufous.

Great bear especially for the spring, imagine that pig in the fall after he was floating high on berries and everything else for the winter prep....  Curious- many or any rubbed out spots and thin areas?  How bout the tops of the paws, worn down or pretty thick?  Did you measure the skull?  What was the melon size?  My guess will be 18 and 1/4".

That's a BIG bear.  From den emergence to fall hibernation, it is not uncommon for a bear to increase it's spring weight 50-60% (except for lactating females, and this is the main reason they don't have cubs every year; they're a huge energy drain).  A genuine 400lb fall bear probably came out of the den around 250.  A genuine 300lb SPRING bear may go 500lbs in the fall, and is a rare bear.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Being a Taxidermist I see alot of people mis judging the weight on Bear. People dont realize what a 400 pound bear really looks like. BTKR has a picture of his 380 pound gutted bear on hear and It looks like a black grizz! Its nice to see pics of bears that have actually been weighed. Again , nice bear.
