My 48RE tranny has been just fine towing up to 12-14K, have it serviced every 30,000 and it keeps on ticking just fine.
I must say the BEST mod is the exhaust brake. I don't have one because the commercial salesman who sold us our 2 trucks apparently didn't want to sell us on an additional $3500 upgrade. When we told him we were so excited about the new 6 speed and the MUCH larger brakes because we tow trailers everywhere that should have been his 1st clue. I've talked to several owners with factory brakes and all are pleased. I realize that aftermarket ones are cheeper and may be better, however a stock rig "should" be easier to fix when you break down in podunk and have it towed to the closest dealership...
